At 3:45 pm on the afternoon of Jan.04 a large falcon approached from the east and made several attacks on pigeons next to the CN underpass on 127 St. in north Edmonton. As I was in the vehicle waiting at the traffic lights at the time it was difficult to get a good look. However today I was at home on high alert 11:00 – 3:00 pm watching for activity around the Grain Terminal as this was the time slot for most of the falcon sightings there over the years. Well, right on schedule the falcon showed up briefly off the sw corner of the building. Before I was able to get binoculars it was gone, however at 11:45 the bird came back once again to attack the pigeons. This time I was able to confirm a large falcon most likely Gyfalcon based on the broad wing profile as it glided back to towards the bldg. Again the views were brief so if anyone is birding this part of town keep a sharp lookout over the railyard along Yellowhead Tr. between St. Albert Trail & 107 St. This the normal hunting territory for the Gyrfalcons. Also watch around Gold Bar as they will cruise the river looking for ducks.
I will keep you posted if I get better looks and as information is available.
