For any birders interested in seeing a Gyfalcon in Edmonton this winter a grey morph bird is now showing up at the Gov't Grain Terminal off 131 St & Yellowhead Tr. It was observed around 11:15 on Dec. 17. On Dec. 24, the bird was soaring back & forth along the west side of the main grain storage silos. The pigeons of coarse were not impressed with its presence & even the Ravens seemed to tolerate it being there. On Dec. 26 it showed up around 9:30AM and then spent considerable time over the next couple hours again soaring along the west face or circling the building. On several occasions the Gyr left the area only to return a short time later when it was succesful in capturing a pigeon. There were Magpies coming from all over the neighbourhood hoping for some leftovers. The best viewing location is along 128 Ave. which boarders an open park to the south. This allows one to keep track of the bird easier for the time being as it does not seem to really make any great effort to chase the pigeons. Also days when there is no really strong winds are best as the pigeons stay more relaxed until the falcon arrives. This is your radar letting you know the Gyr is in the area as the pigoens will go into a towering tight bundle climbing high over the bldg. Del Huget has indicated the Hawk Owl & 2 Rough-legged Hawks are still hanging around South Cooking Lake at the airport.
