Yesterday, Sat. May 28 I was doing a May Species Count in the area around Wakomao L. located along Hwy 18 just east of Clyde. Around 12:30PM I was driving up a sandy road leading north of the highway which dead ends after 2km on a high hill providing an excellent view of the country beyond. Where the aspens meet the jackpine 1km from the highway I sighted 2 Lark Sparrows together on the road. On my approach they flew into a Pine tree however as soon as I stopped the vehicle they came back to the road. I was viewing from about 10m & one bird just sat in the middle of the road while the other moved around feeding. Lark Sparrows are normally found in the badlands of southeast Alberta so maybe the strong winds on May 15 blew them up here. They have been seen in the Calihoo, Picardville & Beaverhill area over the years. Nice treat regardless of how they got here! The other sighting & one which I now expect was a lone Turkey Vulture seen around 5:00 PM soaring north of Twp 604 & Rge Rd 242 (northeast of Wakomao L.) Last year in early June the ENC Field Trip saw 2 together just south of the lake. One never knows what is around the next corner!
