Fred Whiley was birding at Joseph L. on Monday, May 17 and located a Whimbrel.  They used to be seen in the wet fields around Beaverhill L. on occasion at this time of year.  In the Taber region of southern Alberta they come through in the thousands!
Fred also reported seeing numbers of Wilson's Phalaropes in the area.  The Hawk Survey on May 16, at Beaverhill L. located 6 Red-neck Phalarope at the Quarry along with a Semipalmated Plover & 6 Black-bellied Plovers some of which were still in their winter plumage.  Looking Back Lake just north of New Sarepta is a good spot to see large numbers of Red-neck Phalarope at this time of year.
A pair of Hooded Mergansers were seen at the bridge & boat launch at Cross L. last Wed. & Fri.  On Sat. May 15, Gerald Romanchuk & company saw Surf Scoters on the lake.   Other highlights are on the Birding Hotline.
