Siting of a large Northern Bald Eagle (washingtonienisis) Friday, November 25, 2011 in Edmonton on the South end of the University campus-soaring at roof-height on the North side of the Neil Crawford Centre. I'm surprised to see it this late in the year-shouldn't it be high-tailing it to British Columbia by now? Anyway, a very cool eagle to see and so close to my office window I got a great view of it's majestic size and grace. Great end to the week!
A Bald Eagle soariing over Edmonton at this time of year is not as unusual as most people believe. The reality is they are still migrating through the area and are headed to the northern United States or any place in between. Our Bald Eagles do not go to the British Columbia coast. Those birds are resident or move down from the north. Many Bald Eagles overwinter in Alberta well to the north of the city and several can be seen regularly along the river in winter as the open water at Gold Bar Water Treatment plant keeps the ducks around as a food source. Adults will be back on nesting territories by late Feb. in areas 150km north of Edmonton.
