John and I spent a couple of hours walking the trail from Hawrelak Park to the Quesnell Bridge. Notable birds were: a small group of Crossbills in the tree tops, a flock of ~20 C. Redpolls and a hunting N. Shrike that was revealed by the screaming exit of a N. Flicker who did not want to provide lunch. Also in the area the usual C. Geese, Mallards, Gulls, Magpies, Blue Jays, Raven, Pigeons, BC Chickadees, WB Nuthatch, RB Nuthatch, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker and a Pileated Woodpecker. We had hoped to see a Three-toed Woodpecker but no luck, although there was peeled bark in several areas. We are thinking the Crossbills would be White-Winged, we couldn't ID from the views we had. Are Red Crossbills present in the city? I always think of them as a mountain species. Ann
