I always have good luck birding on Grey Cup day – very avid sports fan you understand! So today I went back to Misty Ridge to add another suet feeder for the birds so they would not have to fight over it. The forecast did not look all that promising with mainly cloudy skies & possible flurries but what's to lose. Could always go across country to Cross L. Well with a 25km/h west wind the idea of staying was more attractive. The first eagle (adult Bald) arrived over the bldg. from the east around 12:40 pm quickly followed by a Golden and 3 more adult Bald in a space of 5 minutes. Forget leaving I was on a roll which continued for the rest of the afternoon. In total there were 20 adult Bald Eagle & 1 Golden Eagle passed by the bldg. between 12:40 & 15:40 when it was almost getting dark. As I have normally started birding at Cross L. by now it is unknown whether these numbers are the usual or is it due to the warm fall conditions. The only solution is to continue monitoring late into the fall to find out. With the use of the heated bldg. to sit in this is pretty easy to handle! Just like watching a huge HDTV screen as the eagles cruise by just outside the window! Tough birding, but someone has to do it,so might as well be me!
Its a tough life you live Jim. It looks this snow might hamper some birding efforts in the next couple of days.
