John and I saw a small flock of birds in flight that we'd like some help with. Flock of ~20, sparrow or slightly larger in size, fast, tight synchronized flight, many direction changes, flashing light on the bottom and darker on the top . We had several good looks at them in flight but they disappeared behind the brush without stopping. We have come up with some possibilities but we'd like your suggestions. Thanks, Ann
Hi Ann, Although you gave no indication of where you were or the habitat the description sounds like maybe you saw a flock of Snow Buntings. They frequent the edges of the gravel roads. This time of year the bold B&W pattern shown in the field guiides is not applicable as they have molted into winter plumage. The only other bird that at this time of year in flocks in Starling. However they are all dark. Hope this is of some help as it is the only one that matches the description you provided.
