 Northern Alberta Birding Hotline

I'm not sure how rare this is, but for the past 3-4 weeks we have had 3 night herons sleeping all day on the edge of our slough. We are SE of Sherwood Park, about 20km west of Beaverhill Lake. The Salt book & the Lone Pine birding book both say they are rare occurrences in SE Alberta, so this seems a bit far north.  Can anyone tell me if this is unusual?.

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the info on the Night Herons.  Although this may be the first time you have seen them in your area they are relatively common in the region.  They used to nest around Beaverhill Lake until the water levels disappeard.  They are also in Elk Island, and Lyseng Reservouir near Armena (n. of Camrose).  They are also present at  Big Lake in St. Albert & several marshes nearby.  Most of their Alberta range is to the south of Edmonton through the Parkland & Prairie habitats.  Your sightings are most likely birds that may be starting to migrate as they leave by mid-Sept.

On the evening of August 24th, we saw 6 black-crowned night herons in St Albert atthe observation deck overlooking Big Lake (SE corner). A couple were in flight and 4 were resting on the edges of the ponds. We also saw 3 great blue herons fishing, 2 merlins hunting dragonflies, and 15 sandhill cranes flying overhead. sf laugh Northern Alberta Birding Hotline
