Male Pileated Woodpecker at a bird feeder, north end of Mill Creek Ravine. Bird later perched on a power pole drumming when attacked by a similar sized accipiter, presumably a Cooper’s Hawk from the size.
Hi Randy, thanks for the sighting. Based on your comparison with the Pileated Woodpecker I would think your ID of the accipter as being a Cooper's Hawk is correct. The accipiters are still moving through the area & a few Cooper's do overwinter in this area. The other large accipiter in the city is Northern Goshawk although they are somewhat large than a Pileated.
