We still have fall warblers coming through our yard. Today we had yellow-rumped, palm, mourning and cape may. In other years, we had few warblers and they passed through in August. Is this late or are more warblers just happening to be staging through our yard?
It could be a number of different possibilities. The numbers of individuals which came back, the number of offspring that were successful, the weather, food availability, etc. The birds tend to use certain favorable winds in order to migrate. It is possible that there has not been too many opportunities and this happened to be one of them. Also, if they cannot get enough food to pack on the fat (in order to migrate the distance) then they might end up staying longer just to get their fat reserves up.
