On Sept.28, Kurt Brauner sighted a Long-tailed Duck at Hermitage Park. The next day, Ann Carter failed to find the Long-tailed Duck & instead located a Wood Duck which immediatly flew off. Neither bird has been reported since! Hooded Merganser were seen on both days at Hermitage Park. Don Delaney located Harris Sparrow, White-crowned, White-throat & a Tree Sparrow at Hermitage Park on Sept.30. White-fronted Geese have been coming into Murray Marsh nw of Edmonton at the end of Sept.-early Oct. On Oct.01, Janet Watkinson & myself sighted a Hermit Thrush, & a few Yellow-rump Warblers at Misty Ridge Ski Hill. Gerald Romanchuk made a long tough hike out to some water on the east side of Beaverhill L. (Mundare Beach) on Oct.2. The hike to the water is at least 2km through Canada Thistle, Foxtail & soft “boot sucking mud”. The rewards were there with Bald Eagle, Peregrine, Pectoral Sandpiper, Yellowlegs, thousands of Dowtichers, the first Tundra Swans, Rough-legged Hawk, a few Bluebirds, Rusty Blackbirds & lots of Snow Geese. If one is not able to handle the tough hike & want to see Snow Geese then try Birch Lake south of Innisfree off of Hwy 16 or Bushy Head Lake at Wainright were no long hikes are required. Again with sparrow migration, Don Delaney located 2 Fox Sparrows in his Edmonton yard. Watch for Harlan's Hawks amongst the migrating Red-tail Hawks as they are starting to show up with a few scattered reports turned in.
