With the warm weather prior to this week, Cold Lake still has open water & some very interesting sightings. Richard Klauke birded there on Jan. 14, 2012. The best find was a Greater Black-backed Gull. Also present were Herring Gull (1) Glaucous Gull (6-10), Redhead (1), Common Merganser (250+), Double-crested Cormorant (2) Common Loon (1). Gerald Romanchuk went to Beaverhill L. today, Jan.15, but high wind chills forced him to bird from the vehicle. Highlights were Rough-legged Hawk (3), Snowy Owl (11) Snow Buntings – too many to count ( miilions, according to Gerald ). After the morning fioeld trip to Kinnaird Ravine on Sat. Jan.14, several members of the Edmonton Nature Club drove to the Gov't Grain Terminal in hopes of seeing the Gyrfalcon which has been hunting there. They were not succesful at finding a Gyrfalcon but located a Prairie Falcon instead. I had seen a large slim profile falcon there around 12:20 PM but only for a few minutes. The ENC members saw the falcon come back & was actively hunting the pigeions before landing on the silos along the west side of the bldg. It stayed all afternoon & was last seen just after 4:00 PM when visibility became to poor due to falling snow. It appeared again this morning at 9:00 AM & after several passes around the bldg. was chased from the area by 3 Ravens. It was not seen again all day. Hope it stays around for the rest of the winter. A Pintail duck was observed in with all the Mallards flying around the Grain Terminal on Sat. as reported by the ENC members.
