The question everyone keeps asking of me is in regards to Gyrfalcons in the Edmonton area. In years past the Gov't Grain Terminal at 130 St. & Yellowhead was a well known spot to watch for urban Gyrfalcons each winter. Linda Frey sent photos of a Intemediate grey morph with the head pattern of a Peregrine. This bird was photographed sitting on a utility pole between Grimshaw & Peace River Dec.23. On Xmas day, Fred Whiley saw a similar plumage bird at the Vimy & Hwy 2 junction. This was followed on Boxing Day with a report from John Acorn of one flying over Hwy 2 at the south entrance to Edmonton. Maybe if the weather improves and we get rid of the fog I should have a chance of one at my place next to the Grain Terminal. An imm. was there for about 3 weeks right after Xmas last winter. John Acorn saw a female Snowy Owl at Hwy 2 & Nisku overpass on Boxing Day. This may be the same bird that Hardy Pletz live trapped at the Airport & released near Gibbons on Dec.30. A Barred Owl was seen by Evelyn in the Bonnie Doon area ( 81St. & 95A Ave.) on Dec. 30. This could be the same bird seen on the Edmonton Xmas Count, although Barred Owls are seen on occasion in nearby Mill Creek Ravine.
