A Franklin's Groundsquirrel has come out of hibernation at the Honsaker residence in the Hastings Lake area.  They have had this species on the property for several years now which is a treat.  Ray Cromie & company went owling west of Drayton Valey (Easyford to Entwistle on Mar.13 finding a Pygmy Owl & (15) Great Gray Owls.  Several Snowy Owls Imm. or female were seen at the junction of Hwy 21 & Hwy 16 on Mar.14 by Willie Braun.
I found an adult Bald Eagle at a road kill along Sec.661 & Rge Rd.23 on Sunday which may have been a migrant.  As I have had several sightings in the general area this winter I am unsure, however an imm. & 2 adults were seen at Rge. Rd 260 & Twp 544 just NW of St. Albert on Mar.12,  A Red-tailed Hawk has been sighted at Elk Island Park on Mar.14 by Willie Braun.  There are reports of Rough-legged Hawks on the move in the Lethbridge - Calgary area so won't be long before we see them here!
A report from Mt. Lorette in Kananaskis indicates Golden Eagles are on the move headed for the Yukon with (73) seen on Sat. Mar. 12, and (103) observed on Mar.13. along with 13 Bald Eagles.
The first Canada Geese are showing up in the Edmonton area with reports from Elk Island, west of the city & Eric Wallace reported (3) flying over Sh.Park on Mar. 15.  Tundra Swans & Pintails are being seen in the Frank Lake area near High River south of Calgary along with flocks of Mallards.  With our snow cover & temp. it will be a while before we see that kind of action here.  However it gives us something to look forward to in the coming weeks!
