The male Surf Scoter is still hanging around at Hawrelak Park & some wonder if it is unable to fly, although they need lots of room to get airborne.  The May Species Count on May 29, at Cold Lake had some interesting sightings:  150-200 Sabine's Gulls, Parasitic Jaegar, 5 Pacific Loons at English Bay.  My own Count at Wakomao L. east of Clyde had a pair of Trumpeter Swans back once again on Bouchard L.  In 2007 they nested here & raised 3 young so I suspect it is the same pair.  Low water levels the last couple years made the lake unsuitable but with the rain & snow this spring water is up somewhat.  Due to cold rainy weather we only managed 63 species in 9 hrs. & no Turkey Vultures this year.
Other news, a Lazuli Bunting was reported Margot Hervieux on May 29 from Sturgeon L. 45 min. east of Grand Prairie.  A Black-headed Grosbeak along with 4 Rose-breasted Grosbeak was seen at a feeder in Hinton on May 30.  Last Sunday's Hawk Survey at Beaverhill L. sighted an Osprey drifting SE over the road near Francis Point turnoff.  This seemed like a strange sighting for the area given the lack of water!  A Golden Plover & 5 Red Knots were seen at the Quarry at Tofied on May 31 by Paula.   A trip to Cadomin on June 01, for a Trails & Access Meeting with Teck Coal had a Golden Eagle soaring over Leyland Mtn. (Whitehorse Cr. campgound area) in late afternoon.   Unfortunately we did not have time to look for Harlequin Duck or Spruce Grouse at Watson Cr. campground!
Our tour of the Mountain Park area did yield 2 Elk and many Bighorn Sheep along the road including a group of about 6 rams.  We also saw a female Northern Harrier & Redtail Hawk.  Not bad when viewed from a bus & on a short time line.
