Don Delaney went for a walk at The Point in Elk Island Park on Aug.03 and reported a good variety of shorebirds present. Both Lesser & Greater Yellowlegs, Long-billed Dowitcher (1), Least & Baird's Sandpipers along with Killdeer & Spotted Sandpipers. I made a brief but leisurly trip to Cross L. & area just to the south on Aug.3. At the junction of Sec.801 & 663 a Sandhill Crane was heard. It was either a lone bird or a pair that were flying over as the call quickly faded. Cross L. itself was quiet with 11 Common Loons in a group in middle of the lake and 5 Double Crested Cormorant were seen. The trees at the boat launch parking lot continue to provide good warbler viewing as the young Yellow-rump Warblers were moving through. Other sightings in the Edmonton area are White-wing Crossbills in Whitemud Cr. & Cooper's Hawk in Landsdowne both reported by Martin Sharp. Several Sharp-shinned Hawks have been reported. One from Wetaskiwin & on Aug. 01, I observed large adult female soaring over the bush at Sec.801 & 663. Other than these reports it is still in the quiet period of the year but expect White-fronted Geese & more shorebird reports shortly. Try the Holden Ponds for Snow Geese, Ross Geese & White-fronts this Sept.
