Well the sudden drop in temperatures may not have been good for the birders but it did produce some good sightings including Ken Hansen's sighting of a Proghorn Antelope SW of Holden on Sat. April 24! Other highlights were Trumpeter Swan (pr.)Red-breasted Mergansers, Horned & Red-neck Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant & adult Bald Eagle on the north side of Hastings L. (Rge. Rd. 204). Franklin Gulls, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker,Vesper Sparrow, Eastern Phoebe both Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs, Brewer's Blackbirds & several Western Meadowlarks along with alll the duck species have been observed this week in the Hastings L. to Holden corridor. Swainson's Hawks are starting to appear as are the Rough-legged Hawks. Gerald Romanchuk was able to pick out 5 species of geese at one time on the ponds along #855 just south of Holden. They were: Canada, Cackling, Greater White-fronted, Snow Goose & Ross”s Goose. On Sat. afternoon Jack Park & Janos Kovacs observed several thousand Sandhill Cranes soaring high over the South Cooking L. area. Other sightings include American Avocets (50) Dowitcher sp. (40) at Lyseng Reservoir north of Camrose 10km. Also in the area were Cinnamon Teal (2 males) and good number of shorebirds at Sec. 617 (Miquelon L. rd) & Rge Rd 212 all reported by Gerry Fox. Lincoln Sparrow, Yellow-rump Warbler & Ruby-crowned Kinglet were reported from the trail between Emily Murphy & Kinsmen Park by Don Delaney on April 26. *Ted Hindmarch sighted a male Wood Duck on Limestone Cr. near Willingdon on April 24 as well as Pied-billed Grebe at Cold Lake.
