I know that officially spring started a week ago but the birds this year seem to be on there own schedule! The first Redtail Hawk was reported from Hwy 16 at the east side of Elk Island Park on Mar.26 as well as 2 male Snowy Owls. Gerald Romanchuk found a large concentration of Rough-legged Hawks at Whitford Lake near Andrew (which like most other water bodies in this area is dry). A Northern Shrike & (8) American Wigeon was seen in Terwilligar Park by Martin Sharp and another in the Tofield area this week- end seen by Peter Haddock. Peter also had some new arrivals in the waterfowl catagory: Approx. 60 Tundra Swans flying over the Beaverhill L. area & Pintail. At Black-Nugget Lake: Tundra Swans (15+), Pintail (20+} American Wigeon (4) Snow Geese (100+). Also seen in the Beaverhill area were Tree Sparrows (5+) & Mountain Bluebirds (2). There are several Great Horned Owl nests in Edmonton with young at least 10 days old. The one nest at 70St & Roper Rd. has 3 confirmed young & the other nest at St. Albert Tr. & 156 St. has 1 for sure and possible a couple of younger birds as well. Another nest just south of Tofied on Twp 504 between Rge Rd 190/191 will be checked during our first Hawk Survey in the area which starts Sunday April 4 at 10:00 AM at the Beaverhill L. Nature Centre located next to Hwy 14 in Tofield. This is a driving tour 33 km in length, open to all birders & no charge!
